Meet Mr. J
As the Onward Scholars Program Director at Cathedral High School, Jelani Muñoz Manning is dedicated to helping students discover their potential, pursue their goals, and become confident leaders in their communities. He is passionate about empowering young people to recognize their unique gifts, develop their talents, and use them to make a meaningful impact in the world. Through supportive, student-centered spaces, Jelani strives to ensure every student feels seen, challenged, and inspired to thrive.
Originally from Elk Grove, California, Jelani is a proud product of Catholic education. After graduating from an all-boys Catholic high school, he attended Loyola Marymount University, where he earned both a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Arts in Urban Education.
Before joining the Onward Scholars Program team, Jelani spent five years in the classroom and two years in school administration, building a strong foundation in Catholic education and student development. These experiences have deepened his passion for fostering academic excellence, personal growth, and faith-based leadership while helping students navigate their educational journeys with confidence and purpose.
Outside of work, Jelani enjoys traveling, visiting Disney parks, playing board games, relaxing at the beach, and spending quality time with family and friends. He is grateful to be part of the Onward Scholars community and looks forward to supporting current and future Scholars as they pursue their aspirations, embrace new opportunities, and discover all they are capable of achieving.
