Writing School-Specific Supplement Essays
In addition to your main essay, many colleges ask for supplement essays—shorter responses tailored to each school. These questions help admissions officers see how you’ll fit into their specific community.
Supplements might ask: Why do you want to attend this college? What will you contribute to campus life? How do your goals connect with our programs?
This guide from the Onward Scholars Program will help you:
Understand what colleges want from supplement essays
Recognize the most common prompt types
Write responses that feel genuine, specific, and memorable
What Colleges Want From Supplement Essays
Colleges use supplements to assess fit. They want to know:
✔ Why you’re choosing their school
✔ How you’ll contribute to their community
✔ What specific programs, values, or opportunities appeal to you
The strongest responses show that you’ve done your homework — and that your interests genuinely align with what the school offers.
Common Supplement Prompts — And What They’re Really Asking
Not all supplements are the same — but they fall into a few common categories. Understanding the type of prompt helps you write a stronger, more focused answer.
Tips for Writing Strong Supplement Responses
Show why you’re a fit.
Be specific about why you want to go to the school. Name programs, values, or opportunities that genuinely connect to your interests. Explain why this school aligns with your goals or learning style.
Add something new.
Avoid repeating your personal statement. Share a different side of your personality, background, or ambitions. Use the supplement to expand, not echo.
Keep it focused.
Stick to the word count — be intentional. Answer the prompt directly and with clarity. Clear, thoughtful writing beats perfection.
