Writing the Common App Personal Statement

The Common App personal statement is the one essay that goes to every school you apply to through the Common App, which means most private colleges and many public universities nationwide.

You’ll choose one of several prompts, but the truth is you can write about almost anything. The key isn’t picking the “perfect” topic—it’s writing something real: your perspective, your growth, and the way you see the world.

This guide from the Onward Scholars Program will help you:

  • Choose the right topic

  • Stay true to your voice

  • Write with clarity and confidence—without overthinking it

What Colleges Are Looking For

Admissions officers read thousands of essays. Standing out isn’t about perfect grammar or dramatic stories—it’s about helping them see who you are beyond your GPA.

A strong personal statement shows:
✔ Self-reflection and insight
✔ A unique perspective or way of thinking
✔ A clear connection to your values or goals

Whether you write about family, identity, a challenge, or a quiet moment that shaped you—the key is showing your growth, not your resume.

Tips for Writing a Strong Common App Essay

Be authentic.
Pick a topic that matters to you—not just what you think colleges want to hear. Use real details and be honest.

Reflect on what you’ve learned.
Focus less on what happened, and more on what it taught you. Connect your story to how you’ve grown or what you hope to do next.

Review your work.
Write freely at first (you’ll edit down to 650 words later). Get feedback from people you trust, but remember: your voice matters most.

Choosing the Right Prompt

The Common App offers several prompts—including an open-ended one—so your essay can take many forms. Don’t stress about the “best” choice.

Instead:
✔ Pick the question that lets you tell your most important story
✔ Think about what you want the reader to learn about you
✔ Avoid clichés unless your take is truly unique
